The community of Colmar was burned during the Black Death; the site of the pyre has since borne the name *Judenloch* — the Jews' hole.
The towns of Alsace acted in concert: the municipal councils had conferred at Benfeld a few weeks earlier, despite the bull of Clément VI declaring the accusation of well-poisoning absurd, since the Jews were dying of the plague like everyone else.
