In Bâle, the Jews were locked inside a wooden house built expressly for the purpose on an island in the Rhine, and burned alive. The city council had at first refused to hand over its Jews; it yielded to pressure from the guilds and the crowd, and bound itself by oath to admit no more for two hundred years.
The episode encapsulates the essential mechanism along the Rhine: the urban councils, which drew revenues from the Jews and wished to keep them, were overwhelmed by their own craftsmen. Where the patriciate held firm, the community survived; where the guilds prevailed, it was burned.
