Jews of Villeneuve tortured in the castle, confessions of well-poisoning extracted and disseminated throughout the Empire
At the château de Chillon, on Lake Geneva, Jews from Villeneuve were tortured by officers of the Count of Savoy and confessed to having poisoned the wells on the orders of a rabbi from Chambéry. The records were sent to Berne, then to Strasbourg, then throughout the Empire.
These documents still exist. They constitute the cornerstone of the greatest collective accusation of the Middle Ages: it was not a rumor but a dossier, with names, dates, and signatures, which the Rhenish cities received and believed. Nearly all the destructions of the following year were based upon it.
