Jews tortured and executed, survivors expelled from the city

A ritual murder accusation targeting a child named Rudolf was brought in Berne. The Jews of the city were arrested, subjected to torture, and executed; the survivors were expelled and their property seized by the municipality, which erected a fountain and established a local cult at the supposed site of the crime.

The cult of the child was maintained for centuries and was not officially abandoned until the twentieth century. As at Norwich and Trente, the fabrication of a local saint fixed in stone and in liturgy an accusation whose basis no inquiry ever established.
