In Schaffhouse, on the Rhine, the community was burned during the wave of the Black Death.
The Swiss towns subsequently banned, almost without exception, the residence of Jews on their territory, and these prohibitions remained in force for centuries: which is why there was no longer, until the modern era, any urban Judaism in Switzerland, but only a few villages tolerated in the Surbtal of Aargau.
