Forcalquier, the former comtal capital of Haute-Provence, saw its community attacked during the violence that followed the arrival of the plague.

Provence offers an instructive contrast with the Empire: the plague killed as many there, the accusation of poisoning circulated, and yet the communities were not annihilated. The difference lies in authority: the countess held firm, the towns obeyed as best they could, and the violence remained an outbreak rather than a systematic enterprise. Where authority was lacking, as in Alsace, everything was destroyed.
