the community attacked
The community of Draguignan was attacked during the Black Death massacres in eastern Provence. The town lay between Toulon, where the wave had begun, and the valleys of the interior.
The Provençal massacres of that spring precede by several months those of Spain, Savoy, and Alsace, and above all they precede the confessions of Chillon: no proof was therefore needed for them to take place. The accusation was already formed, shaped twenty-seven years earlier during the affair of the lepers.
