the destroyed community
The Armleder bands passed from Alsace into Upper Alsace and destroyed the community of Rouffach, a city belonging to the bishop of Strasbourg.
Alsace at that time had a dense network of small communities, in market towns where Jews sometimes made up a tenth of the population. This rural Judaism, which would persist until the twentieth century with its village synagogues and country cemeteries, already had its roots by this date; it was struck once by Armleder, and a second time by the Black Death.
