Jews imprisoned, several taking their own lives before execution
In Vitry, the Jews arrested in the lepers' affair were imprisoned awaiting their execution. Several took their own lives in their prison, preferring to die by their own hand rather than be burned or baptized.
The accusation was false and King Philippe V knew it well enough to levy, on the confiscated property, a considerable fine rather than pursue the matter to its conclusion: the Jews of France were ransomed as much as they were persecuted. They were expelled definitively from the kingdom less than twenty years later.
