the community attacked
The community of Nîmes was attacked during the lepers' affair. The city held one of the most important Jewish quarters in Languedoc, with its school and its cemetery.
The royal officers of the seneschal of Beaucaire levied considerable fines on the Jews accused of complicity, before the crown expelled them entirely. The sequence reads plainly in the accounts: the accusation enables the ransom, the ransom exhausts the community, the expulsion gathers what remains.
