the community attacked

The community of Pamiers was attacked during the lepers' affair. The city was the seat of Bishop Jacques Fournier, a methodical inquisitor whose registers are the most detailed source we have on the beliefs of the Midi of that era.

These registers show the rumor taking shape: what people were saying, who had heard it from whom, and how the accusation against the lepers became within a few weeks an accusation against the Jews. They also show that some witnesses did not believe it and said so.
