the community attacked
The community of Rabastens, in the Albigeois, was attacked by the Pastoureaux. The region was home to small dispersed Jewish communities, inherited from the ancient Judaism of the Languedoc.
The bands turned on Jews but also on royal officers, on priests who sheltered them, and on lepers; they recognized no authority and believed themselves invested with a mission no one had entrusted to them. King Philippe V eventually had them dispersed by force, and many were hanged.
