the community attacked after crossing the Pyrenees
The Pastoureaux crossed the Pyrenees and attacked the community of Jaca, in Aragon. King Jacques II ordered the mountain passes closed and troops raised to stop them.
The passage into Spain was brief but deadly; the crown of Aragon, which regarded its Jews as a royal treasure and protected them with consistency, treated the bands as invaders and had them destroyed. This is one of the cases in which princely protection functioned fully, and it stands in stark contrast to what was happening at the same moment north of the mountains.
