the community attacked by shepherd bands
The bands of shepherds and poor people who set out toward Spain under the name of the Shepherds' Crusade attacked the community of Auch, in Gascony. Neither the king, nor the pope, nor the bishops had called for this crusade, and all attempted to stop it.
The movement descended the Garonne striking one Jewish quarter after another, leaving behind entire communities forcibly converted or destroyed. The royal officers who sought to protect the Jews were themselves besieged. It is the greatest wave of anti-Jewish violence the Midi had known before the Wars of Religion.
