Crusade of the Pastoureaux
1320·Castelsarrasin
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community massacred
Castelsarrasin, on the Garonne, saw its community massacred by the Pastoureaux during their descent toward the south. The town had few Jewish families, and they disappeared all at once.
The path of these bands can still be read on the map: they followed the valley, from town to town, as far as the Pyrenees, then crossed into Aragon. The French royal authorities, and then the king of Aragon, eventually dispersed them by force of arms — but only after most of the communities along the way had been destroyed.
