the community massacred by bands from the north
Albi saw its community massacred by bands coming from the north. The city was at that time the seat of an active inquisition, inherited from the crusade against the Albigeois, and the climate there was particularly conducive to denunciation.
The Jews of the Midi had been recalled to France a few years earlier, following a general expulsion; they returned under royal guarantee, stripped of their debts owed to them and without an organized community. The Pastoureaux thus found them newly settled, defenseless and without a local protector.
