the attacked community
The Jewish community of Gimont, in Gascony, was attacked by the Pastoureaux during their descent toward the south. The bastide lay on the road that led from the Landes to the Toulousain.
The conversions wrested during those weeks subsequently posed a problem that the Inquisition resolved in its own way: those who returned to Judaism were prosecuted as relapsed heretics, even though their baptism had been obtained with a knife at their throat. Pope Jean XXII, in Avignon, proved on this point more rigorous than his predecessors.
