The Almoravid conquest put an end to the taifa kingdoms where the Jews of Granada and Seville had held positions as viziers, financiers, and military commanders. The new masters, who had come from the Sahara and were rigorists, judged this status contrary to law and abolished it.
The communities were ransomed, their notables excluded from public affairs, and several families moved to Castile or the Maghreb. The rupture was less bloody than the one that would come with the Almohads half a century later, but it closed the age in which a Jew could, in Andalusia, command an army.
