The Council of Gérone, convened under the presidency of the pontifical legate, extended to the kingdoms of Spain the prohibition against Jews holding public office carrying authority over Christians, and required them to pay tithes on lands acquired from Christian hands.

The measure targeted a situation specific to the peninsula, where kings readily employed Jews as tax collectors, diplomats, and physicians, and where the Reconquista was transferring from hand to hand domains whose revenue the Church intended to retain. It was little enforced at the time, but subsequent councils continued to invoke it repeatedly.
