The call of Gérone was attacked during the violence of Holy Week. The Easter riots, in which the preaching of the Passion inflamed the crowd against the Jews, were a regular occurrence in the Catalan cities.

The call of Gérone was one of the most important in Catalonia and gave Spanish Judaism its masters of the kabbalah, centered on Nahmanide and his school. The jurats of the city and the king of Aragon repeatedly enacted measures to ban the Passion plays and the throwing of stones, to little effect.
