the community burned

A ritual murder accusation was brought in Überlingen, on Lake Constance, and the community was burned. The emperor Louis of Bavaria ordered an investigation and imposed a fine on the city.

The imperial fine, levied for the sovereign's benefit on the city that had destroyed its Jews, is the ordinary mechanism of those years: it repairs nothing, restores no one, and teaches cities the price of a massacre. Many found it bearable.
