Hamas attack on localities and the Nova festival in southern Israel — the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Shoah.
On the morning of Simchat Torah, October 7, 2023, several thousand fighters from Hamas and other groups crossed the Gaza barrier at some thirty points and simultaneously attacked the kibbutzim and towns of the northwestern Negev — Be'eri, Kfar Aza, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Sderot, Ofakim — as well as the Nova festival, an electronic music gathering held near Re'im. Families were killed in their shelters, homes set ablaze, bodies mutilated; sexual violence has been documented by investigative commissions. The attackers took hostages of all ages into Gaza — Israelis and foreigners alike, including infants and the elderly. It is the deadliest massacre of Jews since the Shoah, and it opened the longest war in Israel's history.
