Shooting during the annual pilgrimage

On May 9, 2023, during the annual pilgrimage that draws to the synagogue of the Ghriba, in Djerba, worshippers from Tunisia, France, and Israel, a national guard officer opened fire near the sanctuary after killing a colleague. He shot down guards and pilgrims before being neutralized; the crowd gathered for the service was evacuated in panic.
The Ghriba is one of the oldest active Jewish places of worship in the world, and its pilgrimage one of the last gatherings of Maghrebi Jewry. It had already been targeted by a tanker truck attack at the turn of the century. The pilgrimage has been maintained in subsequent years, under enhanced protection.
