A guard opened fire on worshippers gathered in the Ghriba synagogue, in Djerba, during prayer. The sanctuary is the oldest in Tunisia and the destination of an annual pilgrimage that brings together the Jews of the island and those who have left it.
The attack struck a community already greatly diminished by the departures of previous decades. It foreshadowed the one that the same place would suffer at the beginning of the following century, during the pilgrimage: the Ghriba has become, for those who visit it, a place one protects as much as one prays in.
