Quatre hommes du Front de libération de la Palestine s'emparent du paquebot italien *Achille Lauro* en Méditerranée, entre Alexandrie et Port-Saïd, avec des centaines de passagers à bord, et réclament la libération de prisonniers détenus en Israël. Leon Klinghoffer, passager américain juif, handicapé et voyageant en fauteuil roulant, est abattu et jeté par-dessus bord avec son fauteuil.
Le détournement s'achève par une reddition négociée en Égypte, puis par l'interception de l'avion des preneurs d'otages par la chasse américaine et une crise entre Rome et Washington sur l'aérodrome de Sigonella. Le corps sera retrouvé sur une côte syrienne.
