The port of Larnaca, in Cyprus, served as a base for Israeli sailors and pleasure-boaters in the eastern Mediterranean. A commando unit boarded a yacht there on which three Israelis were present.

The passengers were taken hostage, then murdered after several hours of negotiation with the Cypriot police. The perpetrators, belonging to a security unit of the Palestine Liberation Organization, were arrested and tried in Cyprus.

Israel retaliated a few days later by bombing the Organization's headquarters, located near Tunis. This operation, carried out thousands of kilometers away, marked an escalation of which the Larnaca attack was the starting point.
