Bus 19 crosses Jerusalem from east to west, from Rehavia to Givat Shaul, along Gaza Street, a residential thoroughfare close to the Prime Minister's residence. On January 29, 2004, a Palestinian police officer from Bethlehem boarded it and detonated his charge during the hour when civil servants were heading to their offices. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, linked to Fatah, claimed the attack, which weakened the position of the Palestinian Authority, then engaged in negotiations over a ceasefire. The wreck of the vehicle, long preserved, served as evidence in the civil proceedings brought by the families against the responsible organizations.
