The café Hillel occupies a corner of Emek Refaim street, the main thoroughfare of the German Colony neighborhood, in Jerusalem. The guard posted at the door holds back the attacker for a few seconds before the charge explodes, which spares the interior hall.
Among those killed are a doctor and his daughter, seated together on the eve of the young woman's wedding: the scene left a lasting mark on Israeli public opinion, and the father, an emergency physician, had treated the wounded of previous attacks. Emek Refaim, a street of cafés and bookshops frequented by families and students, embodied the ordinary life that these attacks sought to make impossible.
