Bus 2 runs from the old city toward Shmuel HaNavi and Ramat Eshkol, passing through Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods; on festival evenings, it brings large families back from the Western Wall. On the evening of August 19, 2003, a suicide bomber disguised as an Orthodox Jew boarded the vehicle and detonated himself inside the overcrowded bus. The proportion of children among the dead was one of the highest of any attack during the Second Intifada, and Jerusalem's haredi community, which had until then been relatively spared, was devastated. The attack brought an end to the truce — the *hudna* — that Palestinian organizations had declared that very summer; Hamas claimed responsibility.
