In June 2003, a suicide bomber disguised as an Orthodox Jew detonated himself on a bus on line 14A, on Jaffa Street, Jerusalem's main thoroughfare, at the hour when passengers were returning from work. The explosion ripped open the vehicle in the middle of a commercial street; the death toll made it one of the deadliest attacks of the second Intifada.
Jaffa Street, along which the tram runs today, was struck on numerous occasions during those years, and its merchants made a point of reopening each time within the following days. The attack broke the ceasefire that Palestinian organizations had announced a few days earlier.
