In March 2002, at the height of the second Intifada, a suicide bomber entered Café Moment, an establishment in the Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem, frequented by a young clientele and located a few steps from the Prime Minister's residence. He detonated himself in the packed room on a Saturday night.
The month of March that year was the deadliest of the period for Israeli civilians; the attack on Café Moment, along with that of the Park Hotel in Netanya a few weeks later, precipitated the Israeli military operation in the West Bank. Jerusalem's cafés subsequently acquired security guards and metal detectors, which have never since disappeared.
