Attack — Meron Junction, bus 361
4 août 2002·Carrefour de Meron, bus 361
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
In August 2002, a suicide bomber detonated himself on an Egged bus at the Meron junction in upper Galilee, on the road linking Haifa to Safed. The vehicle was carrying civilians and soldiers on leave; the explosion destroyed it and caused deaths and numerous injuries on a country road, far from any town.
The Meron junction, near the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohaï to which hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make their way each year, had already been the scene of an attack on a bus several months earlier. The intercity lines of the north were subsequently protected and rerouted, and some were suspended.
