The Mahane Yehuda market is the great popular market of Jerusalem, where residents from every neighborhood of the city gather late in the morning — the religious and secular alike.

Two men dressed as businessmen enter the market and set off their charges a few seconds apart, in the narrowest alleyways. The number of dead and wounded is considerable; the destroyed stalls are rebuilt the very next day.

The market will be struck again several times in the following years. This double attack, by virtue of targeting a place where the entire population of the city crosses paths, was perceived as an assault on Jerusalem itself.
