Ben Yehuda Street, a pedestrian thoroughfare in the center of Jerusalem lined with cafés and shops, had already been struck by the car-bomb attack of the War of Independence.
Five weeks after the attack on the Mahane Yehuda market, three men detonated their charges almost simultaneously, in the late afternoon, in the midst of passersby and teenagers. Bystanders were killed, and nearly two hundred people were wounded.
The repetition of these attacks against the most ordinary places of urban life — the market, the shopping street, the bus — durably emptied the center of Jerusalem of its residents during peak hours.
