City of western Transdanubia, Szombathely saw its community locked in a closed quarter then in a factory on the outskirts, before the convoys of early summer.
Szombathely, the ancient Savaria, was home to a thriving community of western Transdanubia, with its grand Romantic-style synagogue, its school and charitable institutions; its families had a share in the textile industry and the city's commerce. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and of Vas county were confined to a ghetto, then gathered in the surrounding camps. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia.
