City on the southern Danube, Baja sees its community assembled with those of the region in municipal premises, then directed toward the departure points of the convoys.
Baja, a port on the Danube in Bács, was home to an ancient community whose families lived from river navigation, the grain trade, and craftsmanship, with its neolog synagogue and its schools. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and district were confined in a ghetto, then gathered in camps in the south of the country. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia; the community was annihilated.
