City of northern Transdanubia, seat of an ancient community, Pápa saw its Jews confined to a closed quarter then to a disused factory, before the convoys of summer.
Pápa, a city of schools and printing houses in Transdanubia, held an ancient and considerable community, with its great synagogue, its yeshiva and its institutions; the Jews there formed a notable share of the population and had long held a place in textiles and trade. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and district were confined in a ghetto, then gathered in the camps on the outskirts. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center of Upper Silesia.
