City in southern Transdanubia, Nagykanizsa sees its community regrouped in a closed quarter then taken to the gathering points of the region, from which the convoys depart.
Nagykanizsa, a market town in Zala county, was home to an ancient and numerous community, one of the oldest in Transdanubia, with its great synagogue, its school and its mutual aid societies; its merchants held a leading position in the commerce of the southwestern part of the country. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and district were confined in a ghetto, then taken to assembly camps. The convoys departed in early summer toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia.
