The Jewish families who remained in Patras, in the northern Peloponnese, were arrested in the summer and transferred to Athens, where they joined the convoys being assembled at that time. Part of the community had left the city or hidden in the villages of the hinterland, warned by what had happened elsewhere in the country a few months earlier. Those who had stayed behind, often the oldest or the least mobile, did not return. Patras had been a port of refuge for families driven out of Spain centuries before.
