Chief town of Szabolcs county, Nyíregyháza sees its community taken to open-air camps set up on neighbouring farms, where Jews from villages are also crammed, before the spring convoys.
Nyíregyháza, the county seat of Szabolcs, was home to an ancient community whose families made their living from the trade in grain, tobacco, and livestock. The city had remained in Jewish memory for the Tiszaeszlár trial, held there in the previous century, where an accusation of ritual murder had been struck down. Following the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the city and of the county were confined in ghettos and in the surrounding assembly camps, from which convoys departed in the spring toward the extermination center in Upper Silesia.
