Nyíregyháza is the capital of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, in northeastern Hungary. The Jewish community, established in the eighteenth century, was one of the most important in the region, involved in trade, the liberal professions, and local industry. In spring 1944, the Jews of Nyíregyháza were gathered in a ghetto and then deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau as part of the massive deportation operation targeting the Jews of Hungary.
