City of the salt mines of northern Transylvania, Dej sees its Jews and those of the district led into a wood on the periphery, where they camp under the trees for several weeks before convoys to the death camp.
Dés, on the Someș, held an ancient and populous community, with its great synagogue, its houses of study, and a network of schools. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and of the entire district were gathered in the Bungur woods, on the outskirts of the town, where they camped in the open air for several weeks. From this improvised camp, at the beginning of summer, the convoys departed for the extermination center in Upper Silesia. The community of Dés never recovered.
