Jews expelled from lecture halls and dormitories, campaign for a numerus clausus
In December 1922, the universities of Cluj, Iași and Cernăuți were the scene of student riots that drove Jewish students from lecture halls, anatomy laboratories and dormitories. The movement, driven by nationalist organizations, demanded the introduction of a numerus clausus and the closure of faculties to nationals from the provinces newly annexed to Romania.
Classes were suspended for weeks and the authorities partly yielded, tolerating de facto exclusions. From these campuses emerged a generation of political leaders, among them those who would shortly found the Iron Guard. The Jewish question thus established itself at the center of Romanian university life for twenty years.
