the choral synagogue ransacked during debates on citizenship
In 1866, during the debates of the Romanian Constituent Assembly on citizenship, a crowd descended upon the recently built choral synagogue in Bucarest, which had become the visible symbol of the hoped-for emancipation. The building was ransacked, its furnishings destroyed, its scrolls desecrated, before the eyes of a public force that did not intervene.
The riot weighed upon the vote: the adopted Constitution reserved naturalization for Christians and excluded from civic rights a population long established in the principalities. The sacking of the synagogue and the constitutional text answered each other, the street having said what Parliament would enshrine in law.
