A town in the plain north of the capital, Hatvan sees its community and those of nearby hamlets packed into a sugar refinery converted into a concentration camp, before convoys to the death camp.
Hatvan, a railway hub on the plain north of Budapest, sustained a community tied to the city's large sugar refinery and the grain trade, with its synagogue and school. After the German occupation of Hungary, the Jews of the town and surrounding villages were gathered in a camp established on its outskirts, from which convoys departed in early summer bound for the extermination center in Upper Silesia. The community of Hatvan never recovered.
