The Shoah (1939–1945)

Roundup of the Chalcis community

24 mars 1944·Chalcis

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

Part of the Euboea community, forewarned, escaped to the mountains and maquis; those who remained were arrested and deported.

A part of the Chalcis community, warned in time, makes its way to the mountains of Euboea and finds refuge in villages and among the resistance. The mayor and the bishop of the city are remembered locally for having refused to hand over the lists that were demanded. Those who could not or would not leave are arrested and deported. Chalcis is one of the few communities in the country of which a notable portion escaped the roundups, and it reconstituted itself after the war, something few others were able to do.
