The Shoah (1939–1945)
Roundup of the Jews of Arta
24 mars 1944·Arta
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Summoned one spring morning, the Jews of Arta are gathered and then led to camps on the mainland; the community of Epirus disappears in a single day.
Summoned one spring morning under an administrative pretext, the Jews of Arta are gathered, stripped of what they carry, then led toward the camps on the mainland by road and rail. The operation is carried out on the same day in several towns of Epirus, so that no community can warn the next. The community of Arta, established since the Middle Ages, disappears in a single day. The emptied houses are occupied before the month is even out.
