The communities of Komotini, Xanthi and Kavala, occupied by Bulgaria, are rounded up in a single night and deported to Treblinka.
Western Thrace, a Greek territory occupied by Bulgaria, was home to the communities of Komotini, Xanthi, and Kavala — ancient and predominantly Sephardic.
The Bulgarian authorities rounded them up in a single night in early spring, gathered them in tobacco warehouses, then transported them by train and by barge along the Danube to Treblinka. As in occupied Macedonia, the protection granted to Jews in the interior of Bulgaria was not extended to those in the annexed territories.
