The Shoah (1939–1945)

Deportation of the Jews of Serres

mars 1943·Serres

Toll
bilan non établi

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

City of eastern Macedonia under occupation, Serres sees its community rounded up on the same day as those throughout the province, confined to a depot then directed toward the river and rail, until the death camp.

Serrès, in Eastern Macedonia, was home to a Sephardic community established since the Ottoman centuries, living from the grain and tobacco trade. The city had been administered by Bulgaria since the partition of Greece. In early March, the occupation authorities gathered the Jews of Serrès, held them in requisitioned premises, then transported them to the river transit warehouses. The convoys then departed for the extermination center of the Generalgouvernement. The community of Serrès disappeared.
