Serrès, a city in central Macedonia, welcomed Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, who founded a prosperous community there with synagogues and institutions. In March 1943, during the Bulgarian occupation, the approximately 900 Jews of Serrès were deported to Treblinka and almost entirely exterminated.
